EMAIL #126 - 3RD JULY 2021 - "IT'S ALL ABOUT BALANCE"

Hi Team,

You may have noticed that for the first time in ages, last Sunday I missed my Weekly Email (sorry). No real excuse, other than I just didn't carve out a couple of hours to sit down and do it, mainly because I was occupied with getting out of town for a week of R&R (school holidays). Oh, and by the way, we purchased a new home last weekend, which proved to be somewhat distracting as well.

The best thing about taking a break from work and your daily routine, is that you have time to reflect on what is going on in your life and to focus on what feels right and what feels wrong. I'm very glad to report that other than this dam pandemic, pretty much everything else currently feels right in my life. For me, the feeling that everything in life is positive and harmonious comes from achieving balance in most areas of my life.

"Extremes in life are easy. Balance takes work." unknown

The above quote is so true; achieving balance takes a lot of work and effort and it rarely happens by itself. First you must know what you value (what is important to you) and then have a good amount of self-awareness. The main areas of my life that I am constantly monitoring and adjusting are,

  • Work/life balance (or work/life integration as it is now more correctly called). I try to do some work every day, even on the weekend and when on holidays (mostly early in the morning), so that I achieve something positive every day, but I am very conscious that my work doesn't intrude too much into family time.
  • Financial balance = monitoring our spending and expenses each week and making sure this balances with our income and budget (i.e., carefully checking the credit card statements each month). As well as actively monitoring our long-term financial plan and achieving milestones along the way.
  • Balanced diet and exercise. This is a big one that I find takes the most amount of self-awareness and determination. Everything in life stems from your diet and general health; so, I believe that being in tune with your body and knowing what it needs to feel balanced and healthy, (without being obsessed or paranoid), is one of the keys to living a balanced and fulfilling life.
  • Balanced relationships. Spending quality time with your loved ones and friends is one of life's great joys and actively seeking and achieving these moments makes all my work and struggles worthwhile. For me, the key to fulfilling relationships is having common interests and being creative together over long periods of time.

"In today's rush, we all think too much, seek too much, want too much, and forget about the joy of just being."
Eckhart Tolle

Stay safe and seek balance,
David.
