EMAIL # 215 -05TH MAY 2023- 'POISE = STYLE + SUBSTANCE"

Having a degree of poise is vital for a successful life.

Throughout life knowledge and experience do not guarantee success.

Success comes naturally to some people, they have an “x-factor” which is hard to fully understand or explain, but I believe it has a lot to do with poise or how they present themselves to the world.

Poise is defined as “a dignified self-confidant manner”. People with poise have an air of stability, balance, and dependability.

“A poised person is a person who can handle their hopes and their fears in a calm manner.” Unknown

Poise seems to come from a high level of self-confidence and achievement, by being at the top of your game. It’s all about having an awareness and control of how you present yourself to the world.

How a builder or architect presents themselves to a client is vitally important. Clients are always looking for a professional who is quietly confident and self-assured with a minimum of ego on display. The right amount of poise and confidence can mean the difference between winning or losing a building project.

“If you don’t get out there and define yourself, you’ll be quickly and inaccurately defined by others.” Michelle Obama

The more you study someone with poise, the more you realise there are many layers and factors that make up this desirable trait.

Author and philosopher Darius Foroux recently published an article titled “Poise: The Key Personality Trait for Worldly Success”, where he stated that poise requires both style and substance.

Foroux mapped out the following four key elements for living and working with Poise.

  1. Develop your own style. How you dress, your personal grooming, how you walk and how you talk all make up your persona and how you present yourself to the world. It’s all about being comfortable with who you are and how you look. Make the most of your attributes and be proactive in developing your own unique personal style.

  1. Back up your style with real substance. Having style by itself is not enough, you must also develop skills, knowledge and experience in your chosen field. This is what it means to have substance. There is no substitute for hard work and determination.

“To truly succeed in the world, you want to combine your style with substance to achieve poise and positive results.” Darius Foroux

Substance should be the foundation for everything you do.

  1. Develop your social intelligence. Social intelligence is all about knowing how to behave and present yourself in a given social setting. You need to be aware of how others perceive you and being okay with adapting your behaviour accordingly. People can be harsh and quick to judge so you need to be confidant enough to not buy into other people’s judgements.

  1. Show yourself to the world. You are unique and to progress in life you must be able to quietly promote yourself to others and show them what you can do. Being proud of who you are and confidant to display it to the world is the essence of having poise.

I have always tried to instil poise and style into my work and into my building company, DDB Design. My hope is that this poise and style translates through to the “brand identity” and business culture the company is known for.

Thanks for reading.

Stay safe and show your style.
