EMAIL# 226- 24TH JULY 2023- # "CHOOSE YOUR ENVIRONMENT WISELY"

Choose Your Environment Wisely.

Environments matter, they shape our behaviour and drive our habits.

We are all responsible for the environment and community that we live and work in.

Residential builders shape the physical environment their clients live in. This is the most rewarding and impactful part of what I do.

I am also fortunate to be able to shape the physical environment my family occupies.

But your environment is much broader than the space where you live and work.

“The environment is everything that isn’t me.” Albert Einstein

Your community and culture are integral parts of your environment. Your family, friends and work colleagues have a huge impact on your behaviour and your beliefs.

The right people and environment can help you to overcome huge obstacles and erase your failures. Supportive people give you leverage.

“Environment is a subset of culture.”

Culture and community shape and reinforce certain behaviours. people are rewarded for certain behaviours and penalised for others. Therefore, it is important to live and work in an environment that suits your priorities and aspirations.

Taking a risk or starting something new is far easier in the right supportive environment. For example, it is much easier to start and stick to a new exercise regimen if you join a great gym, compared to going it alone and working out in your back yard.

You will always achieve more in a shorter period of time if you are part of a team or club, where everyone is working towards the same common goal.

We tend to think that willpower, or discipline, matters most to our behaviour. But while we may believe that willpower should override environmental factors, the reality is that willpower is a finite resource, and human beings are social creatures. Behaviours are often contagious; they spread from person to person through observation and imitation, especially in close-knit communities or cultures” Robert Glazer

So how do you shape your environment to your advantage?

  1. Become highly aware of your surroundings and the people you spend the most time with.

  1. Then be proactive in shaping or selecting aspects of your environment to meet your needs.

  1. Constantly evaluate your surroundings and social group to make sure they align with your values and goals.

  1. Be aware of the achievements and aspirations of the people closest to you.

  1. Regularly ask yourself – is my environment bringing out the best in me?

  1. Also, contemplate on the following thought, “what is the environment in which it would be impossible to fail?”

“When a flower doesn’t bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.” Alexander Den Heijer
